Each button that you press gets converted into a keyboard keystroke - so it's not possible to use the controller to do anything you can't do with the keyboard. One nice thing is that using the Steam Controller setup, you can completely customize your button mappings to suit yourself, and save it as a new configuration. The mappings can't be exact, because there is only one "modifier" button available (instead of 2 on the xbox) and no radial menus. STEAM CONTROLLER EDITOR PCThe other one should have pretty much every single function in the PC version mapped to somewhere on the controller. One should act a lot like the Cursor Preset on the console. Once you've done all that, there should be a couple button mapping presets available. I loved steam controller concept while looking at its 3d model on sketch fab, while looking at its features and functionality. You have to activate it there, and it should show you all the game controllers that are hooked to your PC for you to select one. Click that and you get into the controller setup. There's a little icon on the Steam Client that looks like a controller. It's a little tricky to activate, though. STEAM CONTROLLER EDITOR PS4The Steam Controller can use an xbox controller or a PS4 controller as a substitute. STEAM CONTROLLER EDITOR DRIVERWhen you have an xbox controller plugged into a usb port and you load the game through steam, there is something called the Steam Controller driver that gets loaded. STEAM CONTROLLER EDITOR DRIVERSOne caveat though - for some nutty reason, many older versions of Windows (Win7) do not have any drivers available that will recognize and run a new xbox controller. And you need to use a USB cord on the controller I think - I don't think there's an easy way to make the controller's bluetooth work on PC. It's not exactly the same button mapping as on the console. So I don't have a real need for the Steam controller (which could very well cost upwards of $70 for all I know *insert joke about Steam sales here*) but I'm still excited about the fact that it's provided as an option for gamers to use.I got really used to the xbox controller and was wondering if i could possibly use it on pc. I already have a perfectly functional wired Xbox 360 controller that works great when I use Windows 7 through bootcamp. The Steam Controller tries to emulate the behavior of a joystick, so the closer your thumb gets to the edge of the pad the faster you move/turn the camera/whatever. I should try that out.Īnd yeah, I hear you on your second point. That was only $5 so that's better than having to go out and buy another gamepad when I already have a perfectly somewhat already working one.Sixaxis works great in OSX? Hmmm. I also have GamePad Companion that I can use to remap all the keys. I actually haven't been able to use it in windows at all. The Six Axis already works pretty good out of the box in OSX, better than in windows. So, they made their own controller with an incredibly bold and modular design.īut if you don't like it, you don't have to use it! ) And in order to do that, they have to have a controller that not only works with every PC game, (like the Steam controller does) but one that's made by them and not a third party like Microsoft or Sony or Logitech. Valve wants to expand their Steam service into the livingroom instead of the seclusion of one's bedroom or laptop. It's also for people like me who prefer to use a mouse and keyboard for some PC games (Deus Ex: Human Revolution, StarCraft 2, PlanetSide 2) and prefer to use a controller for other games (Crysis 2, Skyrim, Dishonored). This isn't by any means a replacement for the keyboard and mouse it's an option for PC gamers who want to play on the couch in front of their big-screen TV instead of on their computer monitors. Gotcha.Oh dear, we need to sit down for a talk. this is like a combination of a keyboard/mouse and a controller that isn't actually as good as either. ![]()
